Descent Tactics

The Descent interface I use is comprised of five parts.

Mouse
The mouse is used to point the nose of the ship and fire primary weapons. The pitch setting is inverted you might imagine that the recticle is the mouse pointer. Some people like the pitch set the other way, this works great for flying an airplane but not very well in tight battles. Most people have quick instincts already using the mouse, why not use them rather than confusing them.

Also the mouse works quite well for controlling small movements accurately, but very poorly for turning any significant amount (see foot buttons below).

Joystick
The joystick is much different than that used by most Descent players. I use a side mounted micro switch (digital) joystick with top fire button from Happ Controls. This is used to control ship sliding in four directions (up, down, right, left), and firing secondary weapons.

Foot Buttons
The foot buttons are used to control fast pitching and turning, forward, reverse, afterburner and dropping bombs. It consists of a platform mounted at an angle with arcade style buttons purchased from Happ Controls. These buttons use micro switches and are very responsive and durable. At first the feet are quite clumsy and slow to respond, but after a few weeks this becomes more natural. After a while you will find that the mouse is only needed for fine control while the feet control all other turning. Taking just a few controls away from your hands can make using the mouse less painful.

Headband
The headband is used to control banking. It has two mercury switches attached so that when my head is tilted to one side or the other, the ship will roll in that direction. This is not very accurate so auto leveling needs to be turned on.

Keyboard
The keyboard is used for any occasional use controls. This includes changing weapons, flares, map, headlight and energy to shield conversion.
